Mr. Greens Hole, Russian Freighter, 3 Coal Barges, Brass Wreck, Tex Edwards

A Saturday 3 tank trip followed up by a Sunday morning 2 tank trip out of Pensacola.

The first drop of the drip was at Mr Greens Hole, a natural limestone reef at about 120fsw.  A short dive due to depth, even with a custom nitrox blend, with really cool bottom formations and a drifting safety stop with some exceptionally aggressive remora’s, made for a great dive.

That was followed up by a drop on the Russian Freighter, now mainly a rubble field with the boilers still intact. Read more about the strange history of the Russian Freighter.  We love this site for photography – one of our favorite sites.

We then moved on to the third tank of the day, a shallow dive on the 3 Coal Barges, another Pensacola artificial reef with a story. These barges broke free from their transport en route to their designated sinking site as an artificial reef and scrambling to avoid any navigation hazards, or the wind and rough seas pushing them ashore, the U.S. Navy boarded the barges and detonated explosive charges, sinking them in their present location in less than 50fsw.  Lots of small life and Brandi had a visit from a distracted sandbar shark.  She was rounding the corner of some bridge rubble heading one way, he rounded the corner coming from the other direction and I can truthfully say the shark jumped more than her and high tailed it out of there.

The next morning we were back at it again, hitting the Brass Wreck, an unidentified 250 foot wooden hulled schooner sitting at 90fsw.  The wreck’s name comes from the many large brass pins that stick out from the ship’s ribs like tree limbs. Based on the size of the ship, it is believed that the vessel once weighed over one thousand tons and had four masts.  After a nice SI, we moved over the Tex Edwards, an intact deck barge resting at 75fsw, to finish off our weekend.
